South Africa’s booming population drives packaging demand

15 May 2014

South Africa’s young population is driving an explosion in packaging demand from cosmetics and toiletries markets, finds new report from Canadean.

There were almost 1 million more people under the age of 35 in South Africa in 2013 compared to 2003, with this group accounting for 67.1% of the total population in 2013. This rapid growth in the young South African population, combined with more frequent shopping in organised retail outlets, drives the burgeoning demand for packaging, especially from cosmetics and toiletries markets.

Increasing image consciousness among the young South African population, enabled by their increasing disposable incomes, is boosting demand for packaged beauty and hygiene products. Packaging demand from cosmetics and toiletries will grow faster, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% between 2012 and 2017 compared to a CAGR of 3.9% for the South African packaging industry as a whole.

Aerosols are one of the fastest growing packaging types within South Africa’s health and beauty sector, with the market more than doubling in size between 2007 and 2017. Aerosols are commonly used for antiperspirants and deodorants, an integral part of many consumers’ daily health and beauty routines. According to Kirsty Nolan, Analyst at Canadean, “the growing number of South Africans, and their growing per capita use, will offer a key opportunity for Aerosol manufacturers.”
